The Servaas site embodies the new beating heart of Diepenbeek, a vibrant municipality between Hasselt and Genk. Surrounding a pretty, pleasant courtyard with a soft and green character, Ciril has successfully united culture and housing with each other.
Diepenbeek’s existing Gildezaal received a makeover and was extended into a real cultural centre including a theatre café, concert halls and a foyer. The courtyard, which was constructed on what once was the old Sint-Servaas school playground, connects the cultural centre with several residential entities. For this PPP-assignment Ciril chose to implement new residential styles, such as patio houses and stacked terrace houses. Additional to this, the site contains 600 m² of shopping area, and it features 25 apartments. Thanks to the numerous pedestrian connections, getting to Diepenbeek’s central market square as a resident is a breeze. Other than a large set of steps on the adjacent streets, a pedestrian walkway towards the library and an entrance to the Varkensmarkt were also created.
