Anyone passing the Leopoldskazerne regularly over the past two years has seen it change enormously. The transformation of this historic site is progressing rapidly. A completely new neighbourhood is being developed as part of a unique concept in the city where living, working and relaxing all seamlessly merge into one. The homes in this unique place are in strong demand: almost half the 90 homes have been sold, while the final phase of sales to the general public begins today.
From disused site to vibrant, multifunctional and urban neighbourhood
Neighbourhood developer Matexi and urban developer Ciril are transforming the historic Leopoldskazerne in Ghent from an outdated and closed former military complex into a multifunctional and lively city neighbourhood. The barracks will be repurposed, but the character of this Ghent heritage building will be retained as far as possible.
This new neighbourhood will house 80 apartments, 10 houses and numerous commercial and socio-cultural spaces, such as the new provincial government building, flexible studio spaces, and a hotel, restaurant and nursery. The Paradeplein, which will become the heart of the site, will be softened and transformed into a lively green square for the people of Ghent and homeowners of De Kazerne to meet and socialise in peace in the middle of Ghent’s museum district. This unique transformation project has been implemented fully in line with today’s spirit of carefully making use of all the available open space while meeting the increasing need for energy-efficient homes.
Final phase of sales started
The first phase of sales of the homes began in 2021. The start of the sale was particularly successful, with 60% of the 43 residential units on offer sold after two months. A year and a half later, all 43 homes have been sold except for one penthouse. The first residents will be able to move in at the end of 2022. The works on the other Leopoldskazerne buildings and the beautiful parade square are progressing nicely, and the site will start to sparkle even more next year.
Living in the former barracks is a great opportunity because of the unique location and the various types of homes, which attract both younger and older people. An inter-generational mix of residents will enhance social contact and benefit the neighbourhood.
Forty apartments and seven houses on Eekhout will be put up for sale to the general public in the final phase of the sale. Each has its own unique layout, light and authentic elements.
