During Publica, which is the annual meeting event for public authorities and the private sector, the EBP traditionally presents the Publica Awards. In doing so, the initiators want to reward laudable government projects and put them in the spotlight. In the category “City Development and Mobility”, the redevelopment of the Leopold Barracks into a new city district was awarded the bronze prize.
THV Leopold designed the repurposing of the Leopold Barracks, a collaboration between DMI Real Estate, Matexi and Democo. The project will house the new provincial house for East Flanders, a day care, an art school, offices for the Ministry of Defence, a hotel and residential units. All of this will be centred around a neighbourhood park. The jury praised the transition from a closed barracks to an open and green area for everyone to enjoy. They were also charmed by the BREEAM-ambitions - 70% of the required energy will be generated on site and the remaining purchased energy will be 100% green.
