In the late 90’s Ciril helped shape Belgium’s very first collaboration between the public and private spheres, through the makeover of Genk’s city square. A large parking area neighbouring the city hall was newly appointed with 26 commercial spaces, 99 apartments, a hotel, and an underground parking lot counting 750 spaces. All of this based around an attractive square for, by, and with Genk’s citizens.

Both newly built and existing buildings in the city centre were integrated into one big area specially designed for strolling and relaxing, reaching from city hall to the Grote Markt, where approximately 14,000 m2 of commercial space was freed up for locals and shopaholics alike. In addition, a lot of work also went into creating the infrastructure for a new market square and library, creating space for social dialogue and a healthy mix of purposes.

Now more than 10 years after its completion in the mid-2000’s, the city square has turned out to be a true success story. The commercial centre attracts more visitors, parking is easier, residents can enjoy more than 6,000 m2 of rooftop gardens in the very heart of Genk, and new shopping opportunities provide a constant interaction between the shop traders and Genk’s local residents. Today, the people of Genk are meeting each other on the vibrant city square, where they catch up, build parties, and enjoy life together.
